Why did I decide to
hold a camp?

思ったいきさつ
私、上岡（うえおか）（ククイキャンプ代表）は子どもと働くことが大好きです。年長のときに「大きくなったら先生になる！」と決め、小学高学年生の頃には、近所の子を集めて児童館に連れて行ったり、公園で一緒に遊んだりしていました。
また、小さい頃から「どうして人間は戦争をするんだろう？」ということにも大変興味があり、字が読めるようになると、図書室や図書館にあった戦争関係の本を片っ端から読むような子でした。そして子どもたちが大人同士の争いの犠牲になることに、子どもながらに心を痛めました。
教師になった一番の理由は、シンプルに子ども達と毎日を過ごしたかったからです。そしてもう一つの理由は、世界の平和に微力なりとも貢献したかったからです。大学一年生のときに読んだ本の中で、マハトマ・ガンジーが言っていました。「平和な世界をつくるためには、まず子ども達の教育から始めなくては」と。それを読んで、教師への道を進む気持ちはさらに深まりました。
I am Akari Ueoka, Kukui Camp Director, and love working with children. As a kindergartner, I decided, "I will be a teacher when I grow up!" In the upper elementary school grades, I would gather neighbors' children and take them on excursions or play with them at nearby parks.
Also, as a child, I devoured any book about wars that I could find. I was curious about why humans fight, wanted to learn what tragedies humans have caused, and wondered how we could avoid such tragedies in the future. Even as a child, I felt very protective of other children who fell victim to conflicts caused by adults.
I became a teacher mainly because I simply loved being around children. I also wanted to contribute to world peace, however small. In a book I read during my first year of college, Mahatma Gandhi said, "To create a peaceful world, we must start with children's education." When I read that, my desire to become a teacher deepened.

旧ユーゴスラビアでの
子ども達との交流
東ヨーロッパにあった旧ユーゴスラビア連邦が、崩壊することになったバルカン戦争終結後、大学生であった私は、2004年に戦争を経験した子ども達のために開かれたキャンプで、ボランティアをする機会に恵まれました。そのために一生懸命お金を貯めて、クロアチアに飛びました。
戦争で引き裂かれた様々な地域から子ども達が集まり、敵対していた地域から来た子ども達と交流し、「あぁ、あいつらも笑ったり悲しんだり、俺らと一緒なんやな」「あの子たちも親を亡くしたんか」と、互いの経験や心に抱えた痛みを学び、友だちになっていくのを目の当たりにしました。
そして、それはとても大切なことだと思いました。一度友だちになれば、大きくなったときに、「あの夏出会ったあの子たちの頭の上に爆弾を落としたくない」と少しでも思ってくれるだろうと思ったからです。
During my college years, I had an opportunity to volunteer at a children's camp in the former Yugoslavia after the Balkan War ended. I raised the money to go to Croatia where the camp was held.
I saw children interacting with other children from all over the war-torn area, including the opposing side. Learning about what each other went through and the pain they carried inside made them realize, “Oh, those kids are just like us; they laugh and cry. They also lost their parents.”
I thought this was very important because once we become friends, we think, "I don't want to drop bombs on the friends I met that summer."

地元愛も世界を想うことも大事
私がこうしてキャンプを開催している一番の理由は、子ども達に、世界に、自分の住んでいる地域に、極めては「人」に興味を持ってもらいたいからです。そして様々な背景や文化を持った人々と出会ってほしいと思っています。そうすることで自分の内側の世界も広がりますし、世界にお友達ができます。
子どもたちだけでなく、この地球に生きている私たち一人一人が「地球人」と意識して生きていく必要性のある時代にあると思います。
子どもは私たち人類の宝であり、希望です。その子ども達が大きな視野で物事を見て、「どうやったら世界のみんなが幸せに暮らせるのか、そのために自分に何が出来るのか」と常に問い続けられる地球人になっていけますように。
それと同時に、世界だけに目を向けるのではなく、自身の毎日に存在する身近な人や住んでいる地域を大切にできる、そんな地元も愛する地球人になっていけますよう、そのお手伝いをすることが私の何よりもの願いであります。
世界平和は家庭から。平和に貢献したければ、自分の内に平和を築かなくてはと思っています。
I hold camps like this mainly because I want children to be interested in the world, in their own community, and ultimately in people. I also want them to meet people from various backgrounds and cultures. By doing so, they will expand their inner world and make friends around the globe.
I believe that we are living in an age in which each of us, not only children but also those of us living on this earth, need to live with an awareness that we are people of the earth.
Children are the treasure and hope for humanity. I aspire for children to see things from a larger perspective and become global citizens who always ask themselves, "How can I help everyone in the world live happily, and what can I do to contribute to this?"
I also hope they care about where they live and cherish the people and communities around them because world peace begins at home. It starts with us.
Why did I name it Kukui Camp?
どうして
「ククイキャンプ」と
名付けたか？
ククイは、古代ハワイアンの方々が、明かり、燃料、薬、染料、装飾品など、さまざまな用途に使っていたことから、ハワイ州の州木となりました。ククイの木のナッツがキャンドルとして使用されるため、ハワイ語で「ククイ」という言葉には、灯（ともしび）、光、ランプという意味があります。
元々はマレーシア、メラネシア、ポリネシアが原産で、1000年以上前にポリネシアから船で渡ってきた人々によって、ハワイに持ち込まれました。ククイは湿った環境でよく育つので、ハワイ諸島の雨がよく降る地域にたくさん見られます。
荒れる海原（うなばら）に光を放つ灯台のように、子ども達がどんなときでも、自分の内を照らすにあるククイ、すなわち灯（ともしび）を見つけられますように。そしてその「ククイ」を、世界とシェアできる人になってくれますように。また、出会う人々の内に「ククイ」を見つけられますように。そんな願いから、このキャンプをククイキャンプと名付けました。
Kukui became the state tree of Hawaii because the ancient Hawaiians used it for a variety of purposes, including light, fuel, medicine, dye, and decorations. The kukui nut is rich in oil and used for candles, so the word "kukui" in Hawaiian means light.
Originally from Malaysia, Melanesia, and Polynesia, kukui was brought to Hawaii over 1,000 years ago by Polynesian voyagers. Kukui grows well in moist environments and is abundant in wet areas of the Hawaiian Islands.
Like a lighthouse shining on a stormy sea, may children find the kukui, or light, that always shines within them. And may they share their "kukui" with the world and see it within each person they encounter. This is why I have named this camp Kukui Camp.

あります！
英語を学ぶというよりも、英語で学びます。
全てのアクティビティが英語で指導されます。もちろん安全に関わる内容の場合、日本語で説明させていただきますが、基本英語で行われます。
また、例えば日本から5名のお子さんが参加される場合、マウイからも5名の子ども達が参加します。その子ども達と一週間一緒に過ごします。
そうすることで生きた英語に触れ、教科書や黒板を前に学ぶのではなく、実際に使われている場面を前に肌で感じ取りながら学んでいただきます。
また遠足先では、現地の方と実際に話す機会がたくさんあります。
英語をただただ習得することに焦点をあてず、一番子ども達に体験してもらいたいことは、「どの言語を話していようと、心が通い合うこと」です。
相手を思いやりながら伝えようとすること、また相手が言わんとすることを分かろうとすることは、優しさの溢れた世界を築いていくことに繋がると信じています。そんな心が通い合う瞬間に溢れた毎日を過ごしてもらいたいという思いの元、指導させていただいております。
また、それらの瞬間は子ども達の中に「成功体験」として鮮やかに残るでしょう。それは自信を持つことにも繋がり、日本に帰られてからも、新しいことへの挑戦を促してくれるでしょうし、今まで以上に様々なことに興味を持ってくれることでしょう。
Yes!
You will learn various topics through spoken English rather than learning the language at desks. All activities will be taught in English.
Also, for example, if five children from abroad participate in the program, five children from Maui will participate. They will spend a week together.
Through this approach, the participants will be fully immersed in real-life English, learning through actively participation in situations where English is used.
There are ample opportunities to interact with the local people during the excursion visits.
What we want children to experience most is the moments of, “Oh, she understood what I said!” and “I understood what he said!” — the moments when their hearts feel connected.
Communicating with others with thoughtfulness and the earnest effort to understand what they are trying to say will lead to a world full of kindness. Our camp is driven by the vision of our children cherishing their time filled with profound heart-to-heart exchanges.
These instances will etch themselves as indelible “success experiences” in the children's memories. This will lead to a sense of self-confidence, which will encourage them to take on new challenges after returning to their home country.
What does kukui Camp look like?

どんなことをするの？
毎日、屋内での時間と屋外での時間（遠足）があります。
保護者と子どもは、学校に着いたら別々の教室に行きます。
保護者は子どもの世話に気を取られず、自分のことに集中できる「大人だけの時間」をご堪能ください。別々の部屋で学ぶことで、子どもたちは主体的に学習に取り組むことができます。
また、子ども達はマウイの子ども達と一緒に一日を過ごします。
Every day, there is indoor time and outdoor time (excursions).
Once you arrive, guardians and children go to separate classrooms. The guardians have adult-only time to focus on themselves.
The children can take initiative for their own learning, and they will spend the days with Maui's children.
初日はオープニング・セレモニーで始まります。子ども達と保護者の皆様は、キャンプのインストラクターとマウイの子ども達と対面します。
最終日のクロージンズ・セレモニーには、ホストファミリーも招待し、子ども達と保護者によって、一週間の間に学んだことを何かしらのでシェアしていただきます。
全てのレッスンは、その道のプロの先生に教えていただきます。

The first day begins with an opening ceremony. Children and parents will meet the camp instructors and the Maui children. On the final day, host families will be invited to the closing ceremony, where the children and parents will share what they learned during the camp.
All lessons are taught by professional teachers.
Please see the camp schedule below. Please note, however, that the order in which each activity takes place may change due to inclement weather conditions and other factors.

We will dip in the Iao Valley stream.
レイ（花飾り）を作ったり
You will make a lei (flower decoration).
最終日には閉会式もあります。
There is a closing ceremony on the last day.

対象年齢：年長さんから小学6年生まで
開催日：7月4日（木）マウイ入り
7月5日（金）キャンプ初日
7月10日（水）キャンプ最終日
7月11日（木）マウイを出発
太平洋上にある国際日付変更線を跨ぐので、日本を出発されるのが7月4日（木）の場合、同日にマウイに着きます。
そして、日本に帰国される際は、7月11日（木）にマウイを出発されましたら、日本には7月12日（金）に着きます。
ハワイにいらっしゃる際は、同じ日付を2回過ごし、日本に帰られる際は、一日過ごさずに過ぎるような形となります。
早めにマウイ入りされることも、日程より長く滞在されることも可能ですが、その場合は各自で宿泊先を手配していただくこととなります点をご了承ください。
到着日には（早くマウイ入りをされる方を除き）、ククイキャンプ代表の上岡が空港でホストファミリーとお待ちしております。そしてホストファミリーを参加者の皆様にご紹介いたします。
帰国日には（滞在を延期される方を除き）、上岡が空港にてチェックインのお手伝いをいたします。皆様が無事にセキュリティー・ゲートをくぐられるまで、サポートさせていただきます。

Since the flight crosses the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean, the flight will depart Japan on Thursday, July 4, and arrive in Maui on the same day. If you depart Maui on Thursday, July 11, you will arrive in Japan on Friday, July 12.
You are welcome to arrive early or extend your stay beyond the camp dates, however, please note that you will be responsible for making your own accommodation arrangements.
On the day of arrival (except for those who arrive early), Kukui Camp Representative Akari will be waiting for you and your host family at the airport. She will introduce the host families to the participants. On the day of your return, Ueoka will help you check in at the airport (unless you stay extra days). She will care for you until you pass the security gate.

払い戻しポリシー：
キャンプにかかる費用の大部分は、キャンプが始まるかなり前に支払わなくてはいけないため、払い戻しできる額は、事前にお知らせいただける期間によって異なります。
キャンセルをご希望される際は、info@akaritranslations.comまでメールでキャンセルの旨をお知らせください。
キャンプ第一日目（2024年7月5日）の50日以上前（2024年5月16日まで）にキャンセルをされる場合は、60％の費用が払い戻しされます。
キャンプ第一日目（2024年7月5日）の31日から49日前（2024年5月17日以降2024年6月3日まで）にキャンセルをされる場合は、30％の費用が払い戻しされます。
キャンプ第一日目（2024年7月5日）の30日前以内（2024年6月4日以降）にキャンセルされる場合は、払い戻しはできません。

Refund Policy:
As a significant amount of the cost of camp is paid long before the first camp date, refunds vary based on the amount of advanced notice you are able to provide.
If you need to cancel, you must inform us in writing via email (info@akaritranslations.com).
You will be refunded 60% of the fee for cancellations made more than 50 days prior to the first day of the camp (July 5, 2024).
You will be refunded 30% of the fee for cancellations made between 31 and 49 days prior to the first day of the camp (July 5, 2024).
No refunds will be administered for cancellations within 30 days of camp.

ホームステイの魅力その１
金銭的に一番お手頃です。
参考までに、以下が他のオプションの値段です。マウイはリゾート地であること、また島で土地が限られていることから、家賃はとてもとても高いです。ホテル代もどうしても高くなってしまいます。
例：あるビジネスホテル 一泊$319（食事無し）
例：あるコンドミニアム 一泊$387（食事無し）
また、上記のオプションは全て学校への送迎無しですので、これらのオプションを選ばれる際は、学校まではタクシーやご自分でレンタルカーを借りて来ていただく必要があります。タクシーも毎日利用される場合、結構な出費になってしまいます。またレンタルカーを借りられた場合、レンタル料もかなりする上に、ほぼ一日駐車されたままになるので、もったいない出費になってしまうかと思います。

ホストファミリーと英語での生活を送ることで、英語力が飛躍的に伸びます。もちろん何か困ったことがあれば、コーディネーターが間に入って橋渡しいたしますので、お気軽にご相談ください。
ホームステイの魅力その3
ホストファミリーと深く関わり合い、思い出を作ることができます。「留学して一番の思い出はホストファミリーだ」と、よく留学生が言っています。 言葉の壁を一緒に乗り越え、お互いを理解していく過程はとても特別な経験となります。
ホストファミリーが、朝食と夕食は用意してくださいます。（もちろん何かしらのアレルギーがある場合、また食事制限がある場合など、前もって申込書に明記していただければ、それらをしっかりとホストファミリーに伝えます。）
尚、昼食はホームステイの費用には含まれておりませんので、各自でご用意をお願いいたします。
ホストファミリーに頼めば、スーパーに連れて行ってくれますので、そこでお昼ご飯に必要な素材を買って自分でお弁当を作る、もしくは毎朝学校に着く前にどこかに寄ってもらい、出来合いのものを買って持って来るなどの手段があります。

Homestay Benefit #1
It is the most affordable option. For reference, here are the prices of other options. The housing market is very expensive on Maui as it is a sought-after destination, and space is limited on the island. Hotel rates are also costly.
Examples:
A business hotel is $319 per night (no meals)
A condominium is $387 per night (no meals)
Also, all of the above options do not include transportation to and from the school, so if you choose these options, you will need to take a taxi or rent a car to get to the school. If you rent a car, the rental fee is quite expensive in the summer season, and the car will remain parked for almost the entire day.

Staying with a host family is an effective way to improve your English skills. Our coordinator will be available to assist with communication if needed.

When you study abroad, you will have the opportunity to experience a deep connection with your host family and create lasting memories with them. Many international students have expressed that the time spent with their host family was the best part of their study abroad experience. The journey of overcoming language barriers and developing mutual understanding with each other is an incredibly unique and special experience.
Your host family will provide breakfast and dinner. (Of course, if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions, please indicate them on the application form, and we will make sure your host family is aware of them.)
Lunch is not included in the homestay fee, so please prepare your own.
If you ask your host family, they will take you to a supermarket where you can buy the necessary ingredients for lunch and make your own bento (lunch). You can also ask your host family to stop and pick up something ready-made.

Payment Methods
One-time payment by credit card (Japanese credit cards are accepted) However, a 3.02% payment fee will be added. We will send you a link to make the payment.
Transfer the money to Ueoka's Japan Post Bank account. However, Ueoka will have to transfer the money to the US bank, so there is an additional fee of 1,200 yen. The actual amount to be transferred can be converted at the exchange rate between the dollar and the yen on the day of the transfer. If you make the transfer on a day when the yen is a little stronger, you will save money.
