Why did I decide to
hold a camp?

思ったいきさつ
私、上岡（うえおか）（ククイキャンプ代表）は、子どもと関わることが大好きです。年長のときに「大きくなったら先生になる！」と決め、小学校高学年の頃には、近所の子どもたちを集めて児童館に連れて行ったり、公園で一緒に遊んだりしていました。
また、小さい頃から「どうして人間は戦争をするんだろう？」ということにも強い関心がありました。字が読めるようになると、図書室や図書館にある戦争に関する本を片っ端から読むような子でした。そして、子どもたちが大人同士の争いの犠牲になることに、子どもながら胸を痛めていました。
教師になった一番の理由は、シンプルに子どもたちと毎日を過ごしたかったからです。そしてもう一つの理由は、世界の平和に微力ながら貢献したかったからです。大学1年生のときに読んだ本の中で、マハトマ・ガンジーの言葉に出会いました。「平和な世界をつくるためには、まず子どもたちの教育から始めなくては」。それを読んで、教師への道を進む気持ちは、さらに深まりました。
I am Akari Ueoka, Director of Kukui Camp, and I love working with children. As a kindergartener, I decided, “I’m going to be a teacher when I grow up!” By the time I was in the upper elementary grades, I would gather the neighborhood kids to go on little excursions or play together at nearby parks.
As a child, I also devoured any books about war that I could find. I was curious about why humans fight, wanted to understand the tragedies people have caused, and wondered how we could prevent such tragedies in the future. Even then, I felt deeply protective of children who become victims of conflicts created by adults.
I became a teacher mainly because I simply loved being around children. I also wanted to contribute to world peace, however small my contribution might be. In a book I read during my first year of college, Mahatma Gandhi wrote, “To create a peaceful world, we must start with children’s education.” Reading that made my desire to become a teacher grow even stronger.

子ども達との交流
東ヨーロッパにあった旧ユーゴスラビア連邦が、崩壊することになったバルカン戦争終結後、大学生であった私は、2004年に戦争を経験した子ども達のために開かれたキャンプで、ボランティアをする機会に恵まれました。そのために一生懸命お金を貯めて、クロアチアに飛びました。
戦争で引き裂かれた様々な地域から子ども達が集まり、敵対していた地域から来た子ども達と交流し、「あぁ、あいつらも笑ったり悲しんだり、俺らと一緒なんやな」「あの子たちも親を亡くしたんか」と、互いの経験や心に抱えた痛みを学び、友だちになっていくのを目の当たりにしました。
そして、それはとても大切なことだと思いました。一度友だちになれば、大きくなったときに、「あの夏出会ったあの子たちの頭の上に爆弾を落としたくない」と少しでも思ってくれるだろうと思ったからです。
During college, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a children’s camp in the former Yugoslavia after the Balkan War ended. I saved and raised money on my own to travel to Croatia, where the camp was held.
There, I watched children meet and spend time with other children from across the war-torn region—including those from the “other side.” As they listened to each other’s stories and learned about the pain they carried, many began to realize, “Those kids are just like us. They laugh and cry. They lost parents, too.”
I felt this was deeply important, because once we become friends, we start to think, “I don’t want to drop bombs on the friends I met that summer.”

私がこうしてキャンプを開催している一番の理由は、子どもたちに、世界に、自分の住んでいる地域に、そして究極的には「人」に興味を持ってもらいたいからです。そして、さまざまな背景や文化を持つ人々と出会ってほしいと思っています。そうすることで、自分の内側の世界も広がり、世界中に友達ができます。
子どもたちだけでなく、この地球に生きている私たち一人ひとりが、「地球人」であるという意識を持って生きていく必要がある時代にあると思います。
子どもは、私たち人類の宝であり、希望です。その子どもたちが大きな視野で物事を見て、「どうしたら世界のみんなが幸せに暮らせるのか。そのために自分に何ができるのか」と常に問い続けられる地球人になっていけますように。
そして同時に、世界だけに目を向けるのではなく、日々の暮らしの中にいる身近な人々や、自分の住む地域を大切にできる、そんな「地元を愛する地球人」になっていけますように。そのお手伝いをすることが、私の何よりの願いです。
世界平和は家庭から。平和に貢献したければ、まず自分の内に平和を築かなくては、と思っています。
I hold camps like this mainly because I want children to take an interest in the world, in their own community, and ultimately in people. I also want them to meet individuals from many different backgrounds and cultures. Through these experiences, they can expand their inner world and build friendships across the globe.
I believe we are living in an age when all of us, not only children, but everyone on this earth, need to live with an awareness that we are citizens of the world.
Children are the treasure and hope for humanity. I want them to see life from a broader perspective and grow into global citizens who ask themselves, “How can I help people around the world live happily, and what can I do to contribute?”
At the same time, I hope they care deeply about where they live and cherish the people and community around them, because world peace begins at home. It starts with us.
Why did I name it Kukui Camp?

「ククイキャンプ」と
名付けたか？
ククイは、古代ハワイアンの人々が、明かり、燃料、薬、染料、装飾品など、さまざまな用途に用いていたことから、ハワイ州の州木となりました。
原産はマレーシア、メラネシア、ポリネシアで、1000年以上前にポリネシアから船で渡ってきた人々によって、ハワイに持ち込まれたといわれています。ククイは湿った環境でよく育つため、ハワイ諸島の雨が多い地域に多く見られます。
ククイの木のナッツはキャンドルとして使われることから、ハワイ語の「ククイ」には、灯（ともしび）、光、ランプという意味があります。
荒れる海原に光を放つ灯台のように、子どもたちがどんなときでも自分の内側を照らす「ククイ」すなわち灯（ともしび）を見つけられますように。そして、その「ククイ」を世界とシェアできる人になってくれますように。さらに、出会う人々の内にも「ククイ」を見つけられますように。そんな願いを込めて、このキャンプを「ククイキャンプ」と名付けました。
子どもによって、その「ククイ」が意味するものは違うと思います。そして、それでいいと思っています。ある子にとっては、大好きなサッカーかもしれない。ずっと一緒にいたけれど、今はもうこの世にいない犬かもしれない。もしくは、将来の夢かもしれない。それを思うと内側からエネルギーが湧いてくる。そんな自分の「ククイ」を見つけてほしいと思っています。そして、このククイキャンプでは、その「ククイ」を見つけられるようお手伝いをしています。

Kukui became the state tree of Hawaiʻi because ancient Hawaiians used it for a variety of purposes, including light, fuel, medicine, dye, and adornment.
Originally from Malaysia, Melanesia, and Polynesia, kukui was brought to Hawaiʻi over 1,000 years ago by Polynesian voyagers. Kukui grows well in moist environments and is abundant in the wetter areas of the Hawaiian Islands.
Because the kukui nut is rich in oil and was traditionally used for candles, the Hawaiian word “kukui” means light.
Like a lighthouse shining across a stormy sea, may children find the kukui—the light—that always shines within them. And may they share their “kukui” with the world and also recognize it within each person they meet. This is why I named this camp Kukui Camp.
I believe that what “kukui” means can be different for each child—and I think that’s perfectly okay. For one child, it might be the soccer they love. For another, it might be a dog they were always with but who is no longer in this world. Or it could be a dream for the future. I want each child to find their own “kukui”—something that, when they think of it, fills them with energy from within. At Kukui Camp, we help children discover that “kukui.”

英語を学ぶというよりも、英語で学びます。
すべてのアクティビティは英語で指導します。もちろん、安全に関わる重要な内容は日本語でも説明しますが、基本的には英語で進めます。
また、たとえば日本から5名のお子さまが参加される場合、マウイからも同じく最低5名の子どもたちが参加します。参加者はその子どもたちと1週間を一緒に過ごします。
その結果、生きた英語に触れながら、教科書や黒板の前で学ぶのではなく、英語が実際に使われている場面の中で、体感しながら学ぶことができます。さらに遠足先では、現地の方々と実際に話す機会もたくさんあります。
英語をただ習得することだけに焦点を当てるのではなく、このキャンプで子どもたちにいちばん体験してもらいたいのは、「どの言語を話していても、心が通い合うこと」です。相手を思いやりながら伝えようとすること、そして相手が何を言おうとしているのかを理解しようとすることは、優しさにあふれた世界を築いていくことにつながると信じています。
そんな「心が通い合う瞬間」にあふれた毎日を過ごしてもらいたい。その思いを大切にしながら、指導させていただいております。そうした瞬間は、子どもたちの中に「成功体験」として鮮やかに残るでしょう。それは自信にもつながり、日本に帰ってからも新しいことへの挑戦を後押ししてくれるはずです。さらに、これまで以上にさまざまなことに興味を持つきっかけにもなると思います。
Yes!
Your child will learn a variety of topics through spoken English—not by studying at desks. All activities will be conducted in English.
For example, if five children from abroad participate in the program, at least five children from Maui will also join. They will spend a full week together.
With this approach, participants will be immersed in real-life English, learning by actively taking part in situations where English is naturally used.
There will also be plenty of opportunities to interact with local people during excursions.
What we want children to experience most are those moments of “Oh, she understood what I said!” and “I understood what he said!”—moments when they feel their hearts connect.
Communicating with others thoughtfully, and making an earnest effort to understand what they are trying to say, helps create a world filled with kindness. Our camp is guided by the hope that children will treasure days rich with meaningful, heart-to-heart exchanges.
These moments will remain in children’s memories as unforgettable “success experiences.” They build self-confidence and encourage children to take on new challenges after returning home.
What does kukui Camp look like?

毎日、屋内での時間と屋外での時間（遠足）があります。
学校に到着したら、保護者の方とお子さまはそれぞれ別の教室へ移動します。
保護者の方は、子どもの世話に気を取られず、ご自身のための「大人だけの時間」をぜひお楽しみください。別々の教室で学ぶことで、お子さまたちは主体的に学びに取り組むことができます。
また、お子さまたちはマウイの子どもたちと一緒に一日を過ごします。
Every day includes both indoor time and outdoor time (excursions).
After you arrive, guardians and children will go to separate classrooms. Guardians will have adults-only time to focus on themselves.
Children will take initiative in their own learning and spend each day with children from Maui.
初日はオープニング・セレモニーから始まります。子どもたちと保護者の皆さまは、キャンプのインストラクターおよびマウイの子どもたちと対面します。最終日のクロージング・セレモニーにはホストファミリーも招待し、子どもたちと保護者の皆さまに、この1週間で学んだことを何らかの形でシェアしていただきます。

The first day begins with an opening ceremony. Children and parents will meet the camp instructors and the Maui children. On the final day, host families will be invited to the closing ceremony, where children and parents will share what they learned during the camp.
All lessons are taught by professional instructors.

7月5日（金）キャンプ初日

7月11日（木）マウイを出発
太平洋上にある国際日付変更線を跨ぐので、日本を出発されるのが7月4日（木）の場合、同日にマウイに着きます。
そして、日本に帰国される際は、7月11日（木）にマウイを出発されましたら、日本には7月12日（金）に着きます。
ハワイにいらっしゃる際は、同じ日付を2回過ごし、日本に帰られる際は、一日過ごさずに過ぎるような形となります。
早めにマウイ入りされることも、日程より長く滞在されることも可能ですが、その場合は各自で宿泊先を手配していただくこととなります点をご了承ください。
到着日には（早くマウイ入りをされる方を除き）、ククイキャンプ代表の上岡が空港でホストファミリーとお待ちしております。そしてホストファミリーを参加者の皆様にご紹介いたします。
帰国日には（滞在を延期される方を除き）、上岡が空港にてチェックインのお手伝いをいたします。皆様が無事にセキュリティー・ゲートをくぐられるまで、サポートさせていただきます。

Since the flight crosses the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean, the flight will depart Japan on Thursday, July 4, and arrive in Maui on the same day. If you depart Maui on Thursday, July 11, you will arrive in Japan on Friday, July 12.
You are welcome to arrive early or extend your stay beyond the camp dates, however, please note that you will be responsible for making your own accommodation arrangements.
On the day of arrival (except for those who arrive early), Kukui Camp Representative Akari will be waiting for you and your host family at the airport. She will introduce the host families to the participants. On the day of your return, Ueoka will help you check in at the airport (unless you stay extra days). She will care for you until you pass the security gate.

キャンプ第一日目（2024年7月5日）の31日から49日前（2024年5月17日以降2024年6月3日まで）にキャンセルをされる場合は、30％の費用が払い戻しされます。
キャンプ第一日目（2024年7月5日）の30日前以内（2024年6月4日以降）にキャンセルされる場合は、払い戻しはできません。

Refund Policy:
As a significant amount of the cost of camp is paid long before the first camp date, refunds vary based on the amount of advanced notice you are able to provide.
If you need to cancel, you must inform us in writing via email (info@akaritranslations.com).
You will be refunded 60% of the fee for cancellations made more than 50 days prior to the first day of the camp (July 5, 2024).
You will be refunded 30% of the fee for cancellations made between 31 and 49 days prior to the first day of the camp (July 5, 2024).
No refunds will be administered for cancellations within 30 days of camp.

ホームステイの魅力その1：金銭的に最もお手頃です
参考までに、他の宿泊オプションの料金例をご紹介します。マウイはリゾート地であること、また島で土地が限られていることから、家賃がとても高く、ホテル代もどうしても高額になりがちです。

例：あるコンドミニアム 1泊 $387（食事なし）
また、上記のオプションには学校への送迎が含まれていません。そのため、これらを選ばれる場合は、学校までタクシーを利用するか、レンタカーを手配して通っていただく必要があります。タクシーを毎日利用するとかなりの出費になりますし、レンタカーの場合も、レンタル料が高い上に、車がほぼ一日中駐車したままになることが多く、費用がもったいなく感じられるかもしれません。

ホストファミリーと英語で生活を送ることで、英語力が大きく伸びます。もちろん、困ったことがあればコーディネーターが間に入り、橋渡しをいたしますので、安心してご相談ください。
ホームステイの魅力その3：深く関わり、特別な思い出ができます
ホストファミリーと深く関わり合い、かけがえのない思い出を作ることができます。「留学して一番の思い出はホストファミリーだった」と話す留学生はとても多いです。言葉の壁を一緒に乗り越え、お互いを理解していく過程は、きっと特別な経験になります。

For reference, here are the prices of other accommodations. Housing is very expensive on Maui because it is a sought-after destination and space on the island is limited. Hotel rates are also costly.

Please note that the options above do not include transportation to and from school. If you choose one of these options, you will need to take a taxi or rent a car to get to campus. If you rent a car, summer rental rates can be quite high, and the car will likely remain parked for most of the day.

Living with a host family is a very effective way to improve your English. If needed, our coordinator will be available to support communication.

A homestay gives you the opportunity to form a deep connection with your host family and create lasting memories. Many international students say that time spent with their host family was the best part of their study abroad experience. The process of overcoming language barriers and developing mutual understanding is truly unique and special.
Your host family will provide breakfast and dinner.
If you have any allergies or dietary restrictions, please note them on the application form, and we will make sure your host family is informed in advance.
Lunch is not included in the homestay fee, so please prepare your own.
